Update: As of 2015, I now work at Inbound Found… if need be, you can reach out to me on twitter here, or on our new website here. Alternatively, to learn about all of our current services, you can see this page.
I’m Jim Thornton and I’m all about your bottom line.
What I “Do”
I specialize in search engine optimization (SEO) with a heavy focus on all things “inbound marketing,” a customer-centric approach based on attraction (think targeting prospects while they’re searching for your service). Although I’ve done some work with “outbound marketing” tactics, I try to stay away from anything consumers don’t like, such as being interrupted with a pitch while they’re trying to watch a video of kittens playing on Youtube at work.
Websites Optimized for Search and Conversions
I also build web assets that align with companies’ existing business processes and goals. I dove into web design/development about a year ago to be a better technical SEO and understand site architecture at the code level. So I’m not a “designer” but I can build a lean optimized site, informed by data that provides an enjoyable experience for your users. Here’s a short list of sites I’ve built in the last year:
- Anthony Wood Photography
- Paradise Ocean Resort
- Roman Holiday Resort
- Theism Hip Hop
- 2 Percent Commission
- Inkwater Entertainment
- Atlantis Investment Properties in progress
What I Actually Do
I spend about 20% of my time talking to or meeting with clients, 75% on my computer, and about 5% of my time working on side projects. I get my thrills beating out a client’s target competitors online, watching content assets I’ve built accumulate links or buzz, or having lightbulb ideas to creatively solve problems in a way that grow returns and reduce costs for clients. So if you don’t know your current cost per acquisition or cost per lead, I help you figure those things out and then reduce the costs within a budget so we can scale up what works and cut what doesn’t.
Experience and Education
I started learning SEO in 2005 with Aaron Wall’s SEOBook back when it was an 80 page PDF file. At the time, I was looking for ways to generate web-based real estate leads while working as a young Realtor in a vacation home market during summers in college. No one wants to buy a home from a teenager so I had to generate as many leads as possible to get my first few sales.
I graduated phi beta kappa and summa cum laude with a B.S. from St. Joseph’s University in Psychology, and minors in Business Administration and Asian Studies. After graduation, I worked as a division manager for a medical products company. In that role I managed the digital strategy, content marketing, and development of an e-commerce website www.drugtestcentral.com. On a $250,000 budget, that site reached profitability within eight months of launch in a highly competitive online “commodities” market.
I then moved to China to chase venture capital money from Chinese businessmen. To pay the bills I taught English, did some translating, and remote freelance internet marketing. No rich Chinese guys wanted to give me money so I moved back to the US to bootstrap a marketing agency.
I have spent the past year working full time on services related to optimized (mostly WordPress) site design, analytics, organic search (SEO), local SEO, paid search (PPC), email marketing, and some social media for branding, lead generation, and audience building.
I am currently handling the online presence for three real estate agencies, a portfolio of resorts, an editorial site in the self-help market, an entertainment company, a production company, and a consumer products company.
